Legislation to cut pay approved
Sunday December 20 2009
Legislation to cut the pay of the country's public sector workers has been signed by the President.
Mary McAleese approved the Bill, which will let the Government reduce wages by between 5% and 15% in the new year.
Public sector unions have vowed to launch a campaign of industrial action against the measures, accusing the Government of taking cash from the most vulnerable people in Ireland while pouring billions of euro into a black hole of banks.
Last week it won the vote on the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Bill by 80 to 69.
Opposition motions seeking to include judges and Anglo Irish Bank workers in the measures were defeated.
The President also signed the Forestry and Appropriation Bills at Aras an Uachtarain.
