Protesters demand Georgia reforms

Sunday November 08 2009

About 2,000 opposition demonstrators have rallied in the Georgian capital to protest against the policies of President Mikhail Saakashvili.

Protesters carrying banners demanded political reforms and more media freedom.

Some even called for Saakashvili's resignation.

The rally was organised by several non-government organisations and opposition parties. It was sanctioned by the authorities and police did not intervene.

The demonstration marked the authorities' crackdown on an opposition protest on that date two years ago.

Saakashvili's opponents have urged him to step down over the disastrous August 2008 war with Russia and what they claim is his authoritarian rule. They staged massive rallies earlier this year, but the protests have fizzled.
