•A FINGAL family demanded that lessons be learned from the tragic death of Fred Balcombe from Skerries, who lost his life in a helicopter crash in what his inquest was told was a 'wholly avoidable accident'. Fred's widow Betty said the verdict at the inquest into his death following his death in the crash in Co Clare in July 2007 was 'no surprise' to the family. A starter generator in the helicopter was found to be largely at fault for the accident, according the Department of Transport's Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU). •SWORDS-based solicitor John Hennessy, who remains under 24hour armed guard, announced his plans to run in June's local elections. His home was petrol bombed in 2006 and he was placed under armed protection following the murder of Baiba Saulite in Swords in November 2006. •Iarnród Eireann defended its plans to introduce parking charges at its railways stations. The company said the charges discouraged parking at rail stations by non rail users and keep spaces available for genuine commuters. •ALMOST 30 apprentices let from SR Technics were hit with a double-whammy in the Budget with many facing halved social welfare payments. The store closed in November 2008 with the loss of 12 jobs. •RESIDENTS and workers in Swords had a lucky escape after a major gas leak was reported on Water Lane, close to Swords Labs and Arch Chemicals. The area was sealed off after the gas pipe was accidentally struck by contractors erecting a telegraph pole. •MINDLESS thugs forced the closure of a Swords playground after causing in the region of € 32,000 of damage to the facility. Vandals set fire and severely damaged the multi-play unit in the playground and it was closed in the interests of public safety.
