Georgina in a spin
IRISH CELEBRITY Georgina Ahern Byrne was in Malahide last week to take part in a 'spinathon' for premature babies.
The socialite, who is married to Nicky Byrne from Westlife, is a patron of the charity and was delighted to take part in the event and show her support for the organisation. The event took place at the MU gym in Malahide and there was a fanastic turnout for the three hour spinathon.
'We had a fantastic turnout and we were delight to have Georgina Ahern there,' said a spokesperson for Irish Premature Babies. 'She's our patron and her two little boys feature in our book ' Tiny Feet'. She did a fantastic job and got loads of people involved as well.' Every year, 4,500 babies in Ireland are born prematurely. Many of these will need specialist treatment at one of the three Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUS) based in the Rotunda hospital, Holles Street, and the Coombe.
Irish Premature Babies are hoping to buy a house where parents from around the country will have somewhere to stay while their child receives treatment as there is no parental accommodation for the parents at these hospitals. 'Parents don't have the money for private accommodation and often remain separated from their baby which is detrimental for both the baby and the family,' said Chairperson Allison Fegan Molloy. The 657 mile distance covered by Georgina and all those who took part in the Spinathon was equal to the distances between all the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU'S) and Special Care Baby Units (SCBU'S), representing the journey that many of our countries tiniest babies must travel.
