Me and my motor: what you're driving

Wednesday March 10 2010

Name: Occupation: Marty Broadcaster Whelan What A Mercedes car do E200 you drive?

What is your dream car? A Range Rover. I've driven one, but I've never owned one. It's like driving an armchair, it's so comfortable.

What is typically on your car stereo? Working with RTÉ Lyric FM, there's a bit of everything. I like classical, but I listen to everything from Bruce Springsteen, to Sinatra.

Sat Nav – yes or no?

No. I like to get lost. It's a great excuse. Do you shop around for the best insurance deal? No. I used to work with PMPA, which is now AXA and I've been with them since I started driving. I talk to them about the best deals for me, I've never been insured with anyone else. Dublin's new 30kph speed limit. Have you stuck to it? I would find it very difficult to stick to it. I drove that stretch once and I found it very hard to do. It doesn't make sense. Some of the speed limits in this country are just mad.

Favourite drive? Home. I love the coast road in Portmarnock. It's the most glorious drive, especially when the sun is shining.

What age did you first start driving? I was 18 and I started driving my dad's car first. My first car was a Datsun 100A. They don't make them anymore.

Did you pass the driving test first time?

No, second time. Any embarrassing incidents from your time learning to drive? None I'm going to tell you about! Learning to drive, I had very poor coordination, learning to steer, know when to brake and then look around at the same time! I did take my dad's car out once when he was at work. I turned a corner at the end of the laneway and knocked the door handle off the passenger side.
