A Skerries lecturer, who is a renowned expert in the field of architecture, has just released a new book, offering a fascinating insight into the Church architecture of the 18th and 19th century.

The latest offering from Brendan Grimes is entitled 'Majestic Shrines and Graceful Sanctuaries - The Church Architecture of Patrick Byrne 1783–1864'. Brendan explained that Patrick Byrne made a big and important architectural contribution with buildings of quality from the 1830s until his death in 1864. By the end of the 18th century almost all the legislation directed principally against Catholics in Ireland had been repealed thus allowing them to build places of worship as they pleased. One of Byrne's most notable designs was the parish church in Rathmines in south Dublin. Brendan lives in Skerries with his wife Olivia, a daughter of the well-know uilleann piper Leo Rowsome. They have a son, Jonathan, and a daughter, Rebecca. He has been a lecturer in the Dublin School of Architecture, DIT since 1983, and has been a visiting lecturer to the College of Architecture, University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

His previous publications include 'Irish Carnegie Libraries: A Catalogue and Architectural History, Dublin 1998.'
