Balcarrick golfers end long wait to land trophy

JUNIOR TROPHY VICTORY SPARKS GREAT CELEBRATIONS

Wednesday June 02 2010

YOUNGER members from the Donabate-based Balcarrick Golf Club are the toast of junior golf after landing a top trophy. The junior foursomes claimed the Andy Desmond Trophy at Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links, much to the delight of the club's members. The trophy is named after the late Andy Desmond who was a local Donabate man and a member of both Forrest Little in Swords and The Island in Donabate.

The club would like to thank the Desmond family for their continued very generous sponsorship of prizes for this event.

This prestigious event takes place annually and acts as a curtainraiser for the new season in junior golf within the Fingal area.

Balcarrick defeated former winners St Anne's in a tense final. After near misses in this and other junior team events over recent years, the hard work and dedication finally paid off for the Balarrick lads, Andrew O'Reilly, Mark Brennan, Kevin Le Blanc and Bobby Ryan. For many years now the putting green at Balcarrick has been a hive of activity every Sunday afternoon as the entire junior section, aged eight and over, prepare to tee-off in their weekly competition.

This has been the training ground which has been the foundation for the recent success and has also led to Balcarrick having five players selected to participate in the GUI (Leinster) junior coaching panel. Club Captain David Rafferty and Junior Convenor Michele Callan are very proud of the boys for bringing home a trophy and pennant to Balcarrick for the first time in the history of Balcarrick Junior Section.

Balcarrick is also delighted that Junior Kevin LeBlanc has qualified to compete in the European Under 11s Junior Championships in Scotland.
