Call for Low Rock swimming designation
Wednesday September 09 2009
MALAHIDE Chamber of Commerce has backed a campaign by a local swimming committee to have a regular bathing spot officially recognised as a swimming facility by Fingal County Council. The spot at Low Rock on the Coast Road between Malahide and Portmarnock, has been the subject of a long-running campaign by local swimmers who want to see better facilities put in there for regular bathers.
Fingal County Council has expressed reluctance in the past to improving facilities in the area for swimmers because it did not want to encourage swimming at this location. The swimmers who already use the spot however, want proper facilities put in there and have asked the council to properly maintain the shelter at Low Rock with improved access and the provision of basic safety services. The chamber has praised the committee's 'great work' in restoring and maintaining existing facilities at Low Rock and says it is time for the local authority to officially recognise the popular spot as a bathing location. A chamber spokesperson said: 'As a coastal location, it is the interests of everyone in Malahide that we support all the efforts to enhance and develop our local amenities.
