THE future of golf in Donabate is in safe hands after an array of trophies were handed out to junior players at Beaverstown Golf Club last week.
After only 25 years in existence, the club has already produced three professional players and is seen by many as the leaders in the field in terms of junior golf development in Fingal. With 170 young members involved with the club, the standard of play on the course last week was strong once more, as the annual president's day saw 100 players take part.
Once the action was complete, a ceremony followed in the club house, on what was the final day of the summer season and president Jim Hender was on hand to present the awards to the various winners.
Eoin O'Connor and Alice Banahan took the president's prizes in the boys and girls categories respectively, while Michael Sands and Rebecca Mangan landed the captain's and lady captain's awards. The singles match play prize went to Robert McMullen, who along with Gary Lawlor also won the foursomes match play, and the golfer of the year awards went to Jamie Kindellan ( boys) and Rebecca Mangan ( girls). Meanwhile, Beaverstown could yet have unearthed another Rory McIlroy after 10-year-old Sean Dowling managed to cut his handicap from 28 to 18 in the space of just three months, deservedly picking up the young member of the year award.
Junior organiser at the club, Pat McCallion, reflected on another successful summer campaign and paid tribute to all those who had helped out.
' I'd like to thank all of the parents of the children who sponsored prizes during the summer, as well as Mark Buckley from Shoe Rack, sponsors of our golfer of the year award,' Mr McCallion said.
' Thanks also to the staff in the golf club for looking after the kids so well and to the junior sub-committee of Harry Rowsome, Mick Fitzpatrick, Andy Collinge, Anne Keating and John Grealy.'
