Golfers get down to business on fairways

LOCAL business folk swapped their briefcases for drivers at the annual Malahide Chamber of Commerce golf classic last Thursday.

A total of 10 teams of four hit the fairways at Malahide Golf Club for one of the real highlights in the town's social calendar, which has been running for the past 12 years. The competition was fierce but enjoyable, as players used the Stableford system - with points based on the number of strokes taken - and two scores counted at each hole. In the end, CD Mullock & Co solicitors from New Street ran out the eventual winners, collecting their prizes in the clubhouse afterwards. As chamber president, Al Ryan, was unable to attend, Deirdre Rochford, co-director of the Irish School of English, deputised and welcomed everyone, ahead of a sumptuous dinner and grand raffle.

' It was a great success and the weather played a big part in the success of the day, on what was one of the hottest days of the year,' organiser, Matt Corcoran, told the Fingal Independent. ' The mood in the camp was brilliant for the evening and the wonderful prizes on offer went down well with those who were there.

' Everybody also complimented Malahide Golf Club, both on the magnificent state of the course and the first-class meal presented to them.'

Supporters who couldn't attend were offered the chance to sponsor a hole and together with the proceeds taken in on the day, the funding raised will be re-invested in the town.

' All monies raised will go towards important community projects - in other words, they're put back into the town,' Matt added, before thanking all those who supported the event.

' In particular, I'd like to thank all of the 10 teams that played, all of the sponsors and all of those who donated a gift on the night, to make it a most enjoyable evening.'
