Locals shock at steel cap on holy well

Wednesday February 25 2009

Locals in Balrothery have expressed concern at the appearance last weekend of a steel cap on top of an ancient holy well and important heritage site in the village.

Representatives from the town's community council claims the well now looks like the mysterious 'hatch' from the hit TV series, 'Lost'. Chairperson of the community council, Niall Keady told the Fingal Independent: 'We will not allow Rosepark Holy Well to be forgotten and demand that Fingal County Council take action.' The community council wants the Rosepark Holy Well fully restored and drainage and security issues around the site addressed, all of which it says are clear conditions of the planning permission on the site. On another heritage issue, the footpath to the town's heritage centre in the old church is increasingly becoming a problem.

The poor state of the path has been raised by local councillors and the community council has drawn attention to the problem which sees the path washed away under heavy rain. The situation has become dangerous for elderly and less mobile visitors and community council chairperson, Mr Keady, says that even small fragments of bone are now emerging in the path from the ground beneath.

According to Fingal County Council, there is a 'natural tendency' for material to 'migrate down the slope' of the pathway. Works on the path thus far have been the 'least invasive possible due to the proximity of graves on either side of the path edge and the likelihood of unmarked burials close to the surface of the ground', according to the local authority.

Fingal County Council's conservation officer and its environment department are now to investigate a way forward and examine other materials that might be used in the construction of a new path.
