A RENOWNED Fingal musical group is gearing up for their annual show, with the production set to be performed for their very first time in this country. Malahide Musical Society will present the Irish premiere of the Australian version of The Pirates of Penzance next spring. A modern spin on Gilbert and Sullivan's hilarious comic operetta, the show is set to run for five nights, from February 22nd to 26th, with a series of auditions taking place this month.

' We will present the Irish Premiere of the Pirates of Penzance - Australian version - in February 2011,' a spokesperson for the society said.

' This high-octane version of the classic is pure musical theatre - not an operetta for G & S purists. This version keeps all the fabulous music and comedy of the original, but makes it more accessible to modern audiences.

' As this is a new take on a traditional show. we're going to give prospective auditionees every chance to get to grips with the music, characterisation and dance requirements.'

' Pirates tells the story of an orphan Frederic, the son of a wealthy 19th century man, whose fate takes a sudden twist when, after his father's death, his hard-of-hearing nursemaid finds him an apprenticeship as a pirate instead of a pilot.

' He fulfills his apprenticeship with not just any old pirate, but rather with the Pirate King himself, the leader of the not-sofierce Pirates of Penzance.

' But by the age 21 and with his indenture ending, Frederic's sense of duty calls him to rid the seas of his former friends.'

An information night will be held on Wednesday, September 8th, at Malahide Parish Hall, with two audition workshops taking place on Wednesday, September 15th and Monday, September 20th.

Auditions will then take place on Wednesday, September 22nd, under the watchful eye of director, Lynda Thompson, musical director, Graham Walsh, and choreographer, Denise Donohoe.
