Local Notes

Sluice River

Wednesday September 30 2009

ANY project aimed at controlling the Giant Hogweed problem at Sluice River Marsh in Portmarnock is the responsibility of the Department of Agriculture.

That is the view of the council's parks division who said that the weed is yet to be designated as 'noxious' by the Department of Agriculture.

In response to a call from Cllr Peter Coyle (Lab), who called for greater control of the weed, the parks division said: 'Giant Hogweed is capable of rapidly spreading due to the large amount of seed produced each year. It has not been designated a noxious weed by the Department.

'A project to determine an effective control of this weed is not a matter for the parks division.'
