HISTORICAL DISPLAYS TO FEATURE
Wednesday September 08 2010
THE grounds of Newbridge Demesne are set to be transformed into a historical time warp this weekend, as the picturesque Fingal park hosts its annual cultural celebrations.
Preparations are well under way for the Newbridge Heritage Festival, which will take place in Donabate this Saturday and Sunday. Fingal Through The Ages is the theme this year and the event will feature displays of various historical periods in the county, up to the 19th Century.
' We're coming to the end of our birthing season now and we have next have our ' living history' event coming up on September 11th and 12th, the Newbridge Heritage Festival,' property manager, Brenda Comerford said.
' Events will include exciting re-enactments, including the North Irish Dragoons, the Roman soldiers of Legion Ireland and the medieval knights of the Newbridge Living History Society. ' We had a go at archery for Heritage Week last Sunday and had a terrific response from the visitors.' The North Irish Dragoons will certainly be one the of the highlights of the show, who will be demonstrating the part played by Irish cavalry in key chapters of our shared history.
A group of equestrian enthusiasts drawn from both communities of Northern Ireland, their displays will include an officers' tent, kitchen, troopers tents, a blacksmith's forge and an operating cannon. The weekend will also feature Legion Ireland, who will be portraying the Roman army in the 1st and 2nd century, including all aspects of military life, such as the legionaries, auxiliaries and allies of Rome.
Displays from the middle ages, provided by the Newbridge Heritage Society will be included, including duelling knights, damsels in distress and have-a-go archery for adults and children. The event is open to the public and admission to the main displays in the park are free. Some events will take place on the farm where the usual entry fees will apply.
