Unique day for local kids to mark World Oceans Day
SKERRIES YOUNGSTERS EXPLORE THE LOCAL ROCK POOLS

World Oceans Day was marked in Skerries with an event in the area.
IT is amazing how much life you can find in a shallow rock pool beside the sea and that is exactly what young Skerries children found out last weekend. The Irish Underwater Council in co-operation with Seasearch Ireland organised a unique day out for local kids to mark World Oceans Day on Saturday 13th last.
Over 30 youngsters gathered at the lifeboat house in Skerries where they were divided into teams and given nets and buckets. They were then sent out to the rock pools to gather as much living things as they could find. Their catch was then brought back to a tank where each individual type of creature was identified and explained. No little being was harmed however, and the children brought all their finds back to the pools to set them free again. Next on the agenda was a walk along the beach to look for shells before the experts of the Irish Underwater Council brought the kids snorkelling. The group then moved to the Skerries Sailing Club where the children watched a DVD and munched on sandwiches.
It was a memorable day for all the kids who took part and as an added bonus all were given a certificate to take home with them.
