First VEC community national school opens

JUNIOR infants at Scoil Chormaic Community National School in Balbriggan are set to make history on Wednesday, September 1st, when they become the first pupils to be educated at one of only three schools of its kind. The new innovative primary school, located on the same site as Ardgillan Community College, was set up under the patronage of County Dublin VEC for children from all faiths and none from Balbriggan and environs.

A FINGAL nurse who gave a lifetime of service to patients in the Mater Private Hospital has retired. Maureen McGarvey of Jordanstown, Oldtown spent 40 years working as a Night Sister and more recently a nurse in both the old and new Mater Private hospitals.

IT'S all systems go for Swords' newest school, as it prepares to welcome its first set of pupils this week. After months and years of planning, Holywell Educate Together will begin teaching this Wednesday, September 1st, initially with a single class of junior infants. An open evening drew wide interest from the surrounding community last week, where parents and children got the chance to meet with teacher, Jill O'Reilly, and principal, Maria Boyne.

Pub forced to rethink plans for beer garden

THE owners of a Swords pub will have to go back to the drawing board if plans for a new beer garden and smoking area are to be approved. Thomas Smyth and Sons Limited has applied for planning permission to change the use of part of a retail unit to the rear of The Cock Tavern on Main Street into a kitchen and toilet, as well as for the construction of a single-storey beer garden and smoking area. The planned outdoor area will be set out at first floor level, over the existing pub, and will incorporate access from the existing ground and first floor lounge areas, if given the go-ahead, while an associated pergola structure is also proposed.

The check-in area is located on the ground floor, facing the entrance doors, where 56 check-in desks are located, 28 at either end of the area. The desks are located in a ' shoreline' design, meaning they are against the back wall, offering more space, with Aer Lingus taking up one half of the floor and Etihad and other US carriers taking up the other.
