Concern area will suffer due to revaluation

Wednesday September 23 2009

SERIOUS concern has been expressed about the revaluation process given that only two local authorities in the entire country, Fingal and South Dublin, have so far gone through the revaluation process.

Councillors warned that any competitive edge the region has would be lost to neighbouring local authorities which had not yet faced the revaluation process.

Mayor of Fingal Ciaran Byrne said the region would suffer a competitive disadvantage to all other areas that hadn't been revalued. He said it was his understanding that the council had no latitude to discount rates.

Cllr Dave O'Connor (NP) said the fact that Fingal's neighbouring local authorities had been through the process put the council at an enormous disadvantage.

'Fingal is now a county which is a lot more expensive to have a business in. With business in serious difficulties, businesses are looking at their options and considering moving their business elsewhere. 'Now with the council facing a decrease of € 10 million in its rates next year, how is the council going to budget for this?'

Cllr Tom O'Leary (FG) said he had received a lot of representations about this from retailers who were 'gob-smacked' at receiving increased rates at a time when the market was collapsing.
