A SWORDS dance crew, who starred on a nationwide RTÉ show, have set their sights on the bright lights of Las Vegas.
Hip-hop outfit, Ghetto Fabulous, were one of eight acts selected for the All-Ireland Talent Show's wild card episode, where they fought it out for a place in the semi-finals. Under the watchful eye of judge and Boyzone star, Shane Lynch, the group put in a phenomenal amount of work, but were sadly pipped at the post following a public vote.
All is not lost however, and the crew, who are based at the Streets Ahead studio in Cloghran, are using all of the experienced gained as they shape up for the Irish and world championships.
' We're disappointed, but we knew we couldn't control the public vote,' director Tara Treacy told the Fingal Independent. 'But we left the competition without any negative comments from the judges.
'We entered last year, but we didn't make it past the first stage as there was another hip-hop crew similar to us, Raw Edge. We were delighted to follow their lead this year.
'We got further in the competition than any hip-hop act had gotten to before, so hopefully this will help put hip-hop on the map.' Ghetto Fabulous have been together since 2007 and is made up of the top dancers from Streets Ahead, with members reauditioning every year. The crew are aged between 14 and 18 and hail from various parts of Dublin, including several members from Swords, training three to six days a week.
Having performed at the National Aquatic Centre, The Wright Venue and the Helix, as well as at Swords' Pavilions Shopping Centre last week, the group's next mission is the national championships.
'They're being held in O'Reilly Hall in Belvedere on March 27th and 28th and whoever qualifies will represent Ireland at the world championships in Las Vegas,' Tara added.
'Last year we went very close to qualifying and the judges said we were the ones to watch. Unfortunately, we didn't win the € 50,000 prize money (from the AllIreland Talent Show), so if we do make it to Las Vegas, we'll be doing more fundraising in the summer.
' We'll put our heads down and hopefully qualify.'
