CELEBRATING 40 years literally 'serving' the community of Malahide is Duffy's on the Main Street and looking after the place for the Duffy family for a lot of those years is one Sean Farrell. Sean spoke to the Fingal Independent and recalled his memories of the Malahide pub over the last four decades.
In fact, this native Kilkenny man has been working at the pub even longer than the Duffy name has been over the door.
He started working at the Malahide pub when it was called Hogan's and the Duffys were wise enough to keep him on when they took over the bar 40 years ago.
'I've been in the bar trade all my life. This was the first and only job I've ever had. A friend of mine wrote to me and told me that Hogan brothers were hiring in Malahide and I've been here ever since,' Sean told the Fingal Independent.
Now it is Sean that manages the bar for the Duffy family and he says the pub has had at least four complete facelifts in the time he has been there.
'These days we have a reputation for a good pint and also has a great sports bar. We have six televisions here and you could have some watching soccer, and others watching racing and others watching rugby in different parts of the bar - we try to cater for everybody,' Sean said.
Originally from Kilkenny, Sean now lives in nearby Portmarnock and loves working in Malahide.
'I love Malahide it's a nice place with nice people and a great place to work,' he said. The pub is now gearing up for a big night on April 25th when it celebrates 40 years with the Duffy name over the door.
There will be food, drink and plenty of music on the night, as the staff and customers of Duffy's celebrate four decades in business and drinking to another 40 years.
The pub has an ideal location on the main street and there is always plenty of passing trade with buses, taxis and trains all stopping nearby. The pub is also a major employer in the town, employing up to 50 people in full-time and parttime positions.
