Grant will be used to improve road safety

Wednesday April 08 2009

The council is aiming to spend a € 50,000 grant from central Government on improving road safety at a dangerous junction in Portmarnock. The money is set to be spent on a new scheme for the junction of the Drumnigh Road and Station Road in the seaside town. The € 50,000 is a Low Cost Safety Improvement Scheme grant from the Government and will cover works close to the railway bridge and the junction with Station Road.

A preliminary design for the scheme has been prepared which includes provision for the installation of speed cushions, a widening of the footpaths through the junction and traffic calming on the approaches to the junction.

The council intends to give leaflets to locals about the plans for the junction and invite the opinions of local residents.

Details of the scheme emerged in response to a motion tabled by Cllr Peter Coyle (Lab) at a meeting of the Malahide/Howth Area Committee. Cllr Coyle wanted to know what plans the council had to improve the junction 'for the safety of pedestrians and vehicles'.
