Jobs may not be created - just moved

Wednesday March 10 2010

THERE remains huge tracts of land across the county that are zoned for industry and employment opportunities that remain undeveloped. About 43% of the county's lands that are zoned for this purpose are undeveloped, according to Fingal's head of planning, Gilbert Power. Mr Power said that in this context that councillors should be careful about zoning new land for employment and industry and said that simply zoning the land for that purpose will not necessarily create jobs. He also warned that excessive rezoning for this purpose could stretch the council's ability to service those lands.

He told councillors at a meeting to consider new amendments to the upcoming County Development Plan: 'Zoning in and of itself does not create employment.' He added: 'If you overzone industrial land or put it in the wrong place you stretch our ability to service it.' He also pointed to the contraction in some employment sectors like retail and said that new zonings for retail may not create new jobs, but simply move jobs from one location to another.
