FINGAL County Council has called on everyone who uses beaches in the area to take responsibility for removing all of their rubbish when leaving.

The local authority has confirmed that, due to financial constraints, it will be significantly reducing the level of litter removal services that were in place in recent years. A spokesperson for the council was responding to complaints about large volumes of rubbish left on a number of beaches over the bank holiday weekend.

Items such as tin cans, plastic bottles, broken glass bottles, food wrappers and leftovers, used nappies and disposable barbecues were left behind by day-trippers at the beaches.

A number of local residents' groups had to remove rubbish from the beaches after last weekend due to the lack of services from the council.

In previous years temporary bins were placed at regular intervals along the beaches and litter removal crews cleaned up after busy weekends.

The council said that they will not be able to operate these services this year due to financial and staffing restrictions. A beach cleaning machine is still in service and was operating in Donabate and Portmarnock after the long weekend but had to be stopped for safety reasons when people began arriving at the beach.
