Plan to relieve traffic chaos at Castlelands

Wednesday September 01 2010

PARENTS have been urged to adopt a ' common-sense approach' to dropping off their children to their schools, particularly in areas where multiple schools exist on the one campus.

Local councillors have highlighted the situation in Balbriggan where four schools, Ardgillan Community College, Bracken Educate Toegeher NS, Gaelscoil Baile Brigin and Scoil Chormaic NS all now operate from a shared campus at Castlelands. Cllr May McKeon and Balbriggan Town Councillor Grainne Maguire have raised the issue as children return to school after the summer break. Cllr McKeon, who chairs the Fingal County Council Transportation Special Policy Committee ( SPC), said that only a coordinated effort by parents, teachers, pupils and school staff would result in the safe delivery and collection of school children'.

' The concern is particularly relevant where there are multiple schools like at with four school facilities in one campus, with a single access/ exit.'

She said that Fingal County Council's transportation department was aware of the difficulty and were drawing up a plan together with school personnel to create a safe alternative off Hamilton Road.

' This will provide a designated set down/ pick-up area giving a supervised plan to encourage the students to use the safe pedestrian pathway for the remaining short journey to the school campus,' she told the Fingal Independent.

' We see this as the ideal solution which will relieve pressure.'
