THE major contribution made by former manager Martin Mullen in the development and growth of Balbriggan Credit Union was glowingly acknowledged and a permanent memorial unveiled to him.

The branch has dedicated its newly converted training room to Martin and credit union chairperson Noeleen Culbert unveiled a plaque in his memory at a ceremony at its headquarters.

The ceremony was attended by Martin's wife Claire and the couple's four children, Stewart, Lisa, Gavin and Daniel, along with friends and credit union personnel.

Sean oversaw the branch for 21 years before passing away at the relatively young age of 49 on September 1st last. During that time he played a central role in the expansion of the organisation in the town which opened in 1968 and now has 17,000 members and provides valuable employment with 16 staff members.

Ms Culbert paid a glowing tribute to Martin at the unveiling ceremony, outlining how the organisation had grown under his stewardship.

Poignancy was added to the occasion when Brian Howard, a member of the credit union staff, recited a poem he had written in Martin's memory to the assembled guests.

Martin's wife Claire expressed the family's gratitude for the memorial to her husband.

He supervised the credit union's growth with the ever-increasing rise in members and the consequential upward demand for services which necessitated extending the branch headquarters.

This entailed the building of a new wing in 2008 and resulted in the conversion of the then boardroom into a training room which now bears the name of Martin and will serve as a permanent reminder to the great work that he carried out during his tenure as manager.
