Portmarnock man takes over as DCU president

Wednesday July 28 2010

PORTMARNOCK resident Brian MacCraith has been officially inaugurated as the President of Dublin City University.

Professor McGraith, a native of Dundalk, Co Louth, paid tribute to the three teachers who played a significant role in his life.

These were his late father Brian, who taught him 6th class of primary school, his mother Caitlin, who was at the ceremony and was his first teacher in Ballinaclosha Primary School in Armagh, and his 'lifelong teacher', his wife Catherine who taught him more things that she would ever realise. He also paid tribute to his children Aoife and Eoin.

Having

worked

in Dundalk IT before joining the staff of Dublin City University in 1986, Professor MacCraith is keen to foster links between the two establishments.

He sees the Eastern Corridor from north Dublin through Fingal, Drogheda, Dundalk and further north as having a crucial role to play in Ireland's economic recovery.

Acknowledging the challenges which the university sector is facing in terms of funding, he said that he is 'taking a very very positive view of the road ahead and the role which universities like DCU can play in terms of working close with the enterprise sector and playing a big role in employment'.
