A commitment to provide a special needs unit at Balbriggan Educate Together School has been underpinned in its new five-year plan, it has emerged.

The plan, entitled Going from Strength to Strength, outlines the school's four priority areas such as citizenship and human rights education, sports and health, digital learning and special needs provision. The 16-classroom school, which opened last June, has a special needs unit and the process for teaching children with special needs is already in hand, according to principal Fintan McCutcheon.

In its five-year plan, the school endeavours to offer special education provision for any children with special educational needs who wishes to attend the school.

' This special provision is underpinned by a commitment to inclusive education for all, that no child is an outsider,' the five-year plan states.

' Children with any intellectual or physical disabilities are welcome to the school and the school endeavours to provide all such children with an appropriate education and care through the provision of specially equipped baserooms, special purpose rooms and identified Special Education teachers and care-workers in partnership with therapeutic service providers,' the plan continued.

' We already have a significant number of special needs children enrolled and it is our intention to commit to education for these children,' said Mr McCutcheon.

' We have exciting times ahead and over the summer a huge amount of money has been invested in computer technology in the school, with a view to achieving excellence in digital learning as outlined in our five-year plan.

' We are very grateful to the generosity of volunteer parents who worked through the summer designing and installing the purchased resources.
