Student allegedly caused €200 of damage at shop
A STUDENT who allegedly caused € 200 worth of criminal damage has been remanded until September. Amy Byrne, Mourne Park, Skerries, appeared before Judge Patrick Brady at Balbriggan District Court last week.
Byrne, who is 18, was charged with causing criminal damage to a mirror and glass in a picture frame at the Afro Caribbean store on Bridge Street, Balbriggan, on July 9th last.
Inspector Declan Yates handed over evidence of the defendant's arrest, charge and caution, adding the Director of Public Prosecution had recommended disposing of the charge summarily. The court heard the value of the alleged damage came to € 200, before Judge Brady accepted jurisdiction.
Byrne's solicitor sought a short remand to assess the value of compensation to be paid and made an application for legal aid.
The solicitor explained her client was a student, who received the equivalent of social welfare, by attending a Fetac course.
Insp Yates told the judge it was a relatively 'minor matter' for which Byrne was not ' at risk' of serving a sentence of community service if convicted and the application was refused.
Judge Brady remanded Byrne until Thursday, September 2nd, when a plea will be heard.
