Vikings in meteor rise
THE Irish Vikings sports club is the fastest growing group Balbriggan has ever welcomed into its community.
After just two months since its establishment, they already have a huge membership to their name and have new sports clubs planned in the coming months.
It was envisioned by the founders Paula McKenzie, Mary King and Robertas Prakapas that the Irish Vikings would be a non-profit volunteer club acting as a base for various groups and benefit through centralised administration and management.
The club's first aim was setting up an all ages basketball club and their registration days gave evident feedback that the area were just waiting for such a group to form as over 50 people signed up for training.
Local business also supported their goals and have received major sponsorship from Dominos Pizza, Balrothery and Bremore Castle Montessoris, Parents Place, BMAC Media and Smak Domu East European Food.
The club are now focusing their energies on setting up adult and children swimming lessons beginning later in the month.
A bus will leave Balbriggan for Sportslink in Santry where the lessons will take place and free swimming afterwards, the cost is expected to be € 8 and € 5 if you make your own way to the pool. Committee member Paula is still urging people to contact them if they are interested in joining or in starting up their own club.
'We are looking to set up our ladies basketball team and people interested in playing can contact us. We are introducing table tennis in September as an additional sport with the Irish Vikings.'
'Eventually we will be looking at other sports such as hiking, badminton, hill walking. There is a surprise sport coming soon to Fingal and we are thrilled to be able to bring this sport to Ireland for the very first time.'
For more information on the club or for registration details, visit their website www.irishvikings.ie or call Paula on 0866004340.
Bag packing days are also planned throughout the summer months, taking place in Tesco on July 30th, 31st and August 1st and in Dunnes Stores Castle Mill on August 27th-30th.
