Wall crash after Garda car pursuit
A high speed chase between a 22-year-old and the gardaí resulted in the defendant crashing crashign into a wall causing over €2,000 worth of damage, Balbriggan District Court has heard.
Piotr Porzega, Bremore Castle, Balbriggan, appeared before last week's sitting of Balbriggan District Court charged with dangerous driving, no insurance, failing to display an insurance disc and failure to stop.
The court heard that on September 7th at 7.20am, gardaí were operating a checkpoint at Folkestown Little when they saw the defendant's car, Porzega, approaching them.
But when Porzega realised the gardaí were there, the court heard he turned his car around and headed in the other direction at high speed, the court heard.
Gardaí began to pursue the car and when they reached the roundabout, Porzega continued through the roundabout at high speed which forced an on-coming car to swerve to avoid causing an accident, the court heard.
Porzega proceeded down the Harry Reynolds Road and crashed into a garden wall. He than got out of the car and attempted to escape on foot down the road but gardaí apprehanded him.
He was then brought to Balbriggan garda station where he was later charged.
A bill was produced in court which stated that € 2,300 worth of damage was caused to the garden wall, which has since been rebuilt.
Defence solicitor Fiona Kelly, stated that Porzega was fully co-operative with the gardaí and he would pay for the damage casued to the wall.
The 22-year-old had no previous convictions and was working as an operative in Tesco. She stated work was 'light on the ground' but he hoped it would pick up before Christmas.
Ms Kelly said Porzega wanted to pay compensation but would need some time to do so.
Judge Brian Joseph Sheridan stated that driving without insurance carried an automatic penalty of a one year disqualification.
'The level of dangers appears very high. There's a very serious level of general chaos surrounding the situation.'
Judge Sheridan remanded the case to December 11th for compensation to be paid, adding that he would refer all matters to then.
