First-half strikes settle local tussle
Wednesday February 24 2010
HAVING elected to play against a strong breeze in the first half, St Maurs got off to the perfect start with three quick goals in the first five minutes of this clash.
A clever strike from Alan Byrne and a brace from Jack Bourke opened the scoring in this local derby.
However, St Maurs did not have it all their own way as Skerries Harps did not drop their heads and fought back tenaciously with three well worked points. However, strong defensive performances from Sean Daly and Eric Nugent provided the platform for a St Maurs attack who seemed out to prove a point.
Further goals from Sean Kelly and Jack Bourke and points from the captain Eoghan Conroy, Liam McGuinness and Kevin Nugent ensured St Maurs went in at half time leading 64 to 1-4.
The second half started in the same vein as the first with Skerries Harps throwing everything at St Maurs but again being repelled by a tenacious defence, with Luke Hosford putting in a strong performance in the half back line.
Further goals from Jack Bourke, Adam Kennedy and a well executed penalty from Conroy put the result beyond doubt.
Both sides made further changes and a good passing move from substitutes Mark Langan and Ciarán Egan resulted in a well taken score by Kevin Nugent.
In the end St Maurs ran out deserved victors on a scoreline of 9-6 to 2-7.
A fine refereeing performance on the day from Ian Howley of O'Dwyers also deserves a mention.
