Jamie strikes to seal the points

Wednesday March 03 2010

DESPITE losing defender, Mike Doyle, to a second half injury, Naomh Mearnóg made a successful return to Division 2 with a four-point win over Cuala at the weekend.

Five league debuts were handed out on the day, while under-21 Jamie Walsh also started in the league for the first time when introduced in the second half.

The Cuala team, which included Dublin defender Michael Fitzsimons, were on the back foot for most of the game with the McGowan brothers running the show in midfield.

Nonetheless in terms of the scoring it was a relatively tight affair, but the introduction of Walsh after the break reaped dividends as his goal, along with another strike from Ryan O'Sullivan, put Cuala to the sword in the final minutes.

NAOMH MEARNOG: Robbie O' Neill; Frank Doyle, Declan O' Reilly, Eoin Byrne; Mike Doyle, Eoin Lee, Kevin O'Brien; Joe McGowan, Francis McGowan 0-1; Aidan Kenny, Ryan O'Sullivan 1-0, Daniel; Barry, Neil O'Driscoll, Ronan O'Reilly, Neil Houlihan 0-1. Sub: Jamie Walsh 1-4 (03f) for O'Reilly.
