Midfield ace McFaul claims Sporting award

Wednesday December 09 2009

FAI Cup Final Man of the Match Shane McFaul added another string to his bow on Saturday when he was named as Sporting Fingal's Player of the Year at the club's awards night.

The 23-year-old midfielder beat off competition from experienced players like Shaun Maher, Stephen Paisley and Gary O'Neill, plus fellow midfielders Shaun Williams and Robert Bayly, to take the award.

Manager Liam Buckley said of the former Notts County, Brighton and UCD player: 'I was delighted for him.

'Shane had a marvellous season and I thought he was Man of the Match in a lot of games. He is one of the best players in the Premier or First Division from the passing point of view.'

Injuries in the latter part of the year didn't help Alan Kirby's cause and he didn't see action in the FAI Cup Final, but the veteran midfielder did enough to catch the eye of River Valley Supporters Club who voted him as their Player of the Year.

Buckley will depart for the Netherlands tomorrow ( Wednesday) to spend a few days with the Twente club as part of his work to gain the Uefa Pro Licence, and there is unlikely to be any new signings until after his return.

'There's not a huge amount done but I will sit down with the guys over the next two weeks.'
