CORN FAG A BEALACH

Oldtown outfit give second best in opener

NA FIANNA...............2-14 WILD GEESE................2-5

Wednesday March 10 2010

MOBHI Road was the venue for the Wild Geese junior hurlers' first competitive game of the year against Division 6 opponents Na Fianna.

The visitors started with an experimental line-up which included a new midfield pairing of Shane Byrne and Philly McCarthy, while new recruit from Faugh's, Tom Kennedy, filled the number six jersey

Na Fianna enjoyed the better start with a brace of points, before wing back Ciaran Smyth opened the Wild Geese account with a point. Na Fianna replied with 1-3 without reply before Mattie Lamb pointed two frees for the visitors to stay in touch.

Na Fianna finished the half with a well taken goal and following two more frees the contest looked over with Na Fianna up by 2-7 to 0-3 at the break.

However, the second half was a different affair and after both sides had traded frees, Wild Geese then hit the back of the net when Lamb covered 30 metres to get past three defenders before coolly slotting into the Na Fianna net.

Lambe, having made his inter-county league debut for Fingal in Saturday's league clash against Wicklow, added a second goal from a free in the last few minutes to put a more respectable look on the scoreline.

The Geese will be happy enough with the second half performance as this game was the ideal preparation for their first Divison 7 league opener against Whitehall Colmcille on March 21st in Oldtown.
