Fresh hope for Fingal hurling as Burke takes over at helm
NEW Fingal hurling manager, Willie Burke, takes charge of his first game with Fingal as they begin their Kehoe Cup campaign this Sunday at home to DCU. 2012 certainly represents a new hope for Fingal and they have put in a busy few weeks with challenge games against Trinity and St Brigids. St Brigid's had a very successful year on the hurling front where they reached the semifinals of the championship and Burke believes that Fingal can look to his former club as to what can be achieved. 'They won a minor in 2003 and also an under-21 success so you would have had a lot of lads around the 26-27 mark who would have been looking to push on. 'For the Fingal lads they would be feeling that they would be needing to win some silverware at this stage and push on a bit.' Burke takes over the reins from Ben Dorney who stepped down after an eventful season in charge which saw Fingal's Nicky Rackard campaign end on a disappointing note with a third successive defeat to London. Nonetheless Burke feels that Dorney brought a very different approach to the team which can hopefully be drawn upon in 2012. 'Ben was a great character and everything he brought on to the training ground was fresh and new. 'He really brought the lads spirits up, but I think Ben felt he had to take on everything himself.' In his first season in charge Burke will have his father John alongside him as selector along with John Ring, Sean Mcgarry and John Peakes. Fingal again go into the Kehoe cup without some familiar faces due to niggling injuries and college commitments. The influential Davy Byrne will miss their season opener due to a spot of tendonitis picked up whilst competing in the bank holiday marathon while former Dublin underage star Aodhan Mcinerney is on Fitzgibbon duty with DIT where he is in his final year. As such there will be some new faces in the squad for the Kehoe Cup campaign with St Finian's duo David Hatty and Aaron Cullen two new additions with Hatty very impressive so far at midfield in Fingal's pre-season outings. Skerries trio James O'callaghan, Barry Grimes and Andy Smith also get call ups as do Maurs duo, Peter Balfe and Philly Kavanagh. James Mcanaw of St Peregrine's is another addition with Burke also widening his net out to clubs like Castleknock where players like Conor Prunty and Ian Cleary have caught the former Fingal goalkeeper's eye. Given last season's debacle when Fingal fielded just 13 players in one of their games, things are looking up and Burke is hopeful of a better working relationship with clubs this season in terms of getting players released.
