Hurling

St Maur's defy the odds in Gormanston

Wednesday February 17 2010

IN one of the best games of the Gormanston indoor tournament St. Maurs and Mattock served up a thrilling match in the Gormanston indoor hurling tournament. From the throw-in every ball was fiercely contested and both sides displayed great skills.

The early exchanges saw both sides play a cagey game with the defences giving nothing away. However, on 4 minutes Maurs broke the deadlock when Seamus Harford and Eoghan Conroy combined for Jack Conway to put the Rush team in front. Mattock were soon level with a well taken goal.

In the next few minutes both sides came close, before Eoghan Conroy put Maurs back in front and 2 minutes later Seamus Harford sent a rasper to the net.

Some great work in defence from Luke Hosford and Stephen Casey kept Mattock at bay and when Conroy scored goal number four for Maurs it looked all over for the Collon side.

But to their credit a good move saw them reduce the deficit and with 6 minutes to go a brilliant goal from their midfielder saw the margin cut to the minimum. With Maurs under fierce pressure good work from Rory O'Connor set up Conway for a goal, and with time almost up Eoghan Conroy found the Mattock net with a crisp strike.

Under-12

In the U-12 Section Maurs recorded two good wins against the odds. In their first match they played Beann Eadair and fell behind after a mix-up in defence. However some good work from Shane Comiskey, Ian Stirritt and Philip Leonard soon saw Maurs level before the impressive Philip Leonard scored a great goal. There was very little between the sides and after Glen Weldon set up Niall McGoldrick for a goal St. Maurs held on for a deserved win.

In pool 'B' St. Maurs faced Trinity Gaels in what turned out to be a great game of hurling.

Ross Deane at midfield led the way for Maurs and his good work saw Tadhg Hegarty set up Rory O'Connor and the midfielder made no mistake with a well taken goal.

Soon after O'Connor won a puck out that beat a defender and sent a rocket to the Gaels net. Niall McGoldrick then made it all square with a neat flick. Gaels then broke up the field and a cruel deflection saw them retake the lead.

Maurs, to their credit, upped the tempo with Deane dominating at midfield, and it was left to Rory O'Connor to finish to the net after good work from Niall McGoldrick and Cillian Bissett. O'Connor sealed a memorable victory for Maurs with the score of the match in the dying moments.
