Students teach Fingal hurlers an early lesson
Wednesday February 03 2010
JAMES Mulrooney came off the bench to score six points as DCU outgunned Fingal by a seven-point margin in last Wednesday's Kehoe Cup encounter at the Ballymun Kickhams grounds. Fingal got off to the better start, with full forward Declan Daly netting inside the first minute.
However, a strike at the other end from Daly's opposite number Cian O'Connor saw the two teams on level terms, with DCU corner forward Walt O'Connor then finding the back of the net on 21 minutes as DCU went in at half-time leading 2-7 to 1-6.
Mulrooney, operating in the full forward line, sent over four early points to extend the students' advantage to 2-13 to 1-8, before Martin Ormond netted to give Fingal a sliver of hope with ten minutes left on the clock.
However, his effort was soon cancelled out by points from Mulrooney, Gavin Farrell and Arthur Creane, and although Dublin Under-21 star Paul Garbutt found the back of net with just a few moments to go, Seamus Kenny then grabbed DCU's last goal in what proved the last action of the game.
