Wild Geese qualify for quarter- final despite loss
WILD GEESE.................. 3- 3 ST PAT'S PALMERS'N.... 2- 8
Wednesday August 25 2010
THE last of the group games was played last Thursday in Oldtown on a dark, wet and very blustery evening. It saw the first rematch since St Pats beat the Wild Geese in the 2009 quarter final by five points.
Played in front of a very large crowd, it proved to be a very exciting game, with St Pat's coming out the winners.
The consolation is that the Wild Geese had already qualified for the quarter finals but had hoped to be top of the group. Best for the Geese was Danny Kelly, Paul Flood in defence, midfield duo Philly McCarthy and Nathan McCaffrey were outstanding while the two Rennie brothers always looked menacing. The Wild Geese where missing five of their regular first team but it a testament to the strength of their panel that they put it up to the visitors and were extremely unlucky not to win. WILD GEESE: Sean Flatley, Paul Kealy, Ed Sweetman, Mark Kealy, Danny Kelly, Paul Flood, Ciaran Smith, Nathan McCaffrey 0-1, Philly McCarthy, Kevin Conway, Aidan Lenehan 0-1, Tom Smyth, Dave Rennie 1-1, Mick Kennedy, John Rennie 2-0. Subs: David McDonald, Jordan Gilchrist, Charlie Rooney.
