All to play for as Killalane brings down the curtain

Wednesday September 08 2010

THE Loughshinny Motor Cycle Supporters Club Country Crest Killalane Road Races take place this weekend, and they will bring down the curtain on the Irish Road Race season.

There are a number of Irish championships and Southern Centre titles to be sorted. Entries are in from Michael Dunlop, William Dunlop, Ryan Farquhar, Michael Sweeney and Michael Pearson.

Killalane is a very popular event and last year the weather helped to attract one of the biggest crowds of the season.

There is local interest in the Junior and Senior Support Irish Championship, with David Yeomans ( 115 points) holding a slender four-point lead in the Junior Support from Dean Harrison and David Howard just out of the running on 86.

David Yeomans' chance of a championship double evaporated at the Munster 100 when he retired, leaving Balbriggan's Alan Bonner in a clear lead of 24 points over Paul Barron in the Senior Support, and he just has to finish in the points to clinch an Irish championship in his first road race season.

Yeomans has clinched the Southern Centre Junior Support, while Bonner is seven points behind Barron and will have to win and hope his arch rival finishes lower than third.

The 125 Irish Championship is between cousins William Dunlop ( 161) and Paul Robinson ( 142) and Dunlop only needs finish in the top six. William has won the 250.

In the Southern Centre 125 Championship, Ciaran Donnelly leads Sean Leonard by 10 points but knows that Sean Leonard always goes well at Killalane and will hope that his season-long machine problems will stay away this time.

Andy Farrell leads the 650 Supertwins Southern Centre Championship by five points from Derek Shiels, with Wayne Kirwin, David Howard and Derek Costello joint third.

In the 400 Irish Championship Paul Maguire leads Duleek's Alan Connor by just four points, and Connor leads the Southern Centre from Derek Costello by 20 points and needs to finish in the points to deny the Skerries rider a championship win.

The rest of the Irish classes are close affairs, and in the 600 Ryan Farquhar ( 110) leads William Dunlop ( 106) and Michael Dunlop ( 99). Farquhar has the Superbike championship won, but trails John Burrows in the 650 Supertwins by 17 points. He hasn't lost in this class in two years, but his decision to miss the Bush races in a protest may cost him dear.

The Irish Classic Championships have been won by Manx man Alan Brew ( 500) and Robert McCrumb ( 1,000) but the 250 class is between Philip Shaw ( 128) and Barry Davidson ( 103) and the 350 between Denis Gallagher ( 118) and Alan Brew ( 98).

In the Southern Centre Classic Championship, Keith Costello ( 45) is out to deny Freddie Stewart ( 61) a double as the Skerries ace would love to cap his first year in the 350 with a championship win. Stewart is leading the 500 class from Gerry O'Sullivan who announced his retirement last week, and Mark Connolly has the 1,000 Championship won.

In the 250 Southern Centre Championship John Ella and Emlyn Hughes are tied, and with John Walsh already winning the 600, the Senior title is a three-way battle between Derek Shields ( 50), Derek Brien ( 41) and John Walsh ( 40).

The Best of the Best Trophy is sponsored by Loughshinny PRO Ray Kerr and is run at the Skerries and Killalane races, and Ryan Farquhar and Keith Amor are joint leaders, but Amor is a non starter and Michael Dunlop is in third seven points behind Farquhar and a big pay day on offer.

Roads close on Saturday at 1pm, re-opening no later than 7pm, and on Sunday the roads close at 10am, opening no later than 6.30.
