RAILWAY UNION 2 FINGAL 2

Wednesday March 10 2010

FINGAL are making heavy weather of securing their Leinster Division 1 status for another season, after conceding a late equaliser in this relegation scrap last Saturday, writes Marcus Cavaroli.

Gerry Wheeler's team made a good start as Paddy Gahan set up Brian Gray for the opening goal inside 10 minutes, only for poor defending from a corner to hand Railway Union an instant response.

Back came Fingal, as Eamonn Bane scored from a corner move to give the away side a 2-1 half-time lead.

Gahan, Adrian Sweeny and Chris Neville all had chances to give Fingal a more comfortable cushion in the second half, but then they had Gahan and Stephen Thompson sinbinned in quick succession for raising their sticks above shoulder level.

A Railway player also saw yellow in the second half, but it was after Fingal had been restored to their full complement of 11 that they allowed Railway to steal in for the equaliser two minutes from time.

Best for Fingal, who missed the influence of the suspended David Bane from corners, were Gahan and Eamonn Bane.

Another big week is coming up for Wheeler's men, as they face Glennane in a league match in Tallaght on Saturday, before the countdown begins to their Leinster Cup Final against Pembroke Wanderers on St Patrick's Day.

Fingal's second team are also preparing for a big occasion, as they travel to Monkstown in the Irish Junior Cup semi-finals on Saturday.
