Hat-trick of defeats in heavy schedule
Wednesday February 24 2010
ONE home and two away games, including two matches in two days, was the recent schedule for Skerries Bowling Club in the Winter League. This was the result of matches being postponed due to the bad weather in January.
The first of these matches was a home tie against Ierne, and following a good win the previous week against Aer Lingus, hopes were high that the performance could be repeated.
At the end of the regulation 14 ends, the home team were somewhat disappointed to lose what turned out to be a very close match. Skerries won one rink, lost another and forced a draw on the final rink and in overall shots lost by just two. Final score: Skerries 51 shots (1.5 points) Ierne 53 shots (4.5 points) Despite a home victory over Aer Lingus a fortnight ago, the return fixture did not go according to plan for Skerries.
After just five ends on Rink 1, Skerries found themselves 10 shots adrift, but did not panic. Two fours and a two over the next four ends brought Skerries within two shots of their opponents, but that was as close as it got. The game on the second rink was an extremely tight affair, with the score standing at 7-7 half-way through the match. Over the last seven ends Aer Lingus outscored Skerries by nine shots to three and in the process took the rink by seven shots. There was no joy for Skerries on the final rink, despite the fact that they were just one shot down after five ends. Thereafter Aer Lingus won most of the remaining ends with either a single shot or a two to close out this particular rink with five shots to spare. Final score: Aer Lingus 52 shots (6 points) Skerries 32 shots (0 points). -Skerries also travelled to Trim for their first competitive match against Meath Bowling Club.
All three Skerries rinks found it difficult to acclimatise to the artificial surface, which they had never played on before, and as a result were well beaten.
