Patience pays off for ladies
SWORDS ladies got their league campaign back on track this week with a valuable victory over Pembroke.
Some bad first-half misses left the home side wondering if they might have to settle for another costly draw, but second-half strikes from Siobhan McKittrick and Breda Orohoe secured all three points. Swords controlled the game from midfield, with LeeAnn Wood in particular standing out, but it was the finishing up front that let them down after some great chances were created. Swords won multiple short corners, but it wasn't until mid-way through the second half that they managed to convert one into a goal and break the deadlock.
A switch between Cerrie Byrne and Marian O'Brien at the top of the circle saw Siobhan McKittrick dive and shoot the ball past the 'keeper.
Swords grew in confidence after that and were unlucky not to have scored a few more after some great attacking play.
Breda Orohoe, however, made sure of the result 10 minutes from time after receiving a pass on the right and driving into the circle to finish the ball superbly past the 'keeper. • Swords' second team had a great win in mid-week in the cup, when they beat Our Lady's 1-0. This puts the Swords ladies into the semifinal which will be played on Sunday next against Avoca.
