Skerries down to the wire
FOLLOWING a succession of poor results, it was important Skerries' Winter League team got a win in their penultimate game against Westmanstown B.
Half-way through the match the signs were very positive as all three Skerries rinks were well ahead, but this changed over the final seven ends.
On Rink 1, the loss of five shots on the 10th end was a turning point which allowed Westmanstown right back into the game, although the Skerries rink were still two shots ahead going into the final end.
With all their bowls played, Skerries were holding three, but with his last bowl the Westmanstown skip put the jack outside the confines of the rink, which meant the end had to be replayed, and at the second time of asking Westmanstown picked up a three to win by one shot.
On Rink 2, Vincent Hoey and his team were never really troubled, winning nine of the regulation 14 ends with five shots to spare.
Like Rink 1, Rink 3 was cruising for most of the match and ahead by eight at one stage, but the loss of five ends and a total of 10 shots meant that the teams were tied going into the final end. This time it was Skerries' turn to pull the match out of the fire and win the rink by one shot. Final score: Westmanstown B 31 shots [1pt] Skerries 36 shots [5 pts].
