Swords are too hot to handle
SWORDS' Under-18 girls basketball team are enjoying a dream season, and their latest success was a hard-fought 49-44 victory over local rivals Mercy Coolock in the Cup quarter-finals.
This team, coached by Ken Black with the assistance of Trish Kelly and manager Teresa Kiernan, have won every league game to date and are sitting pretty at the top of the table.
They had to call on all their reserves of skill and fitness to account for Mercy, and their reward is a semi-final clash at 4.45pm on March 6th in ALSAA against opposition to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, Tom Corr's Swords Under-15 boys recovered from a defeat on Saturday to get the better of St Vincents 24 hours later.
Despite the best efforts of Brian Walzer and Andrew Brown, Swords lost 35-23 at the hands of Kubs at Greendale, but they regrouped and ran up a big win at St Vincents on Sunday – 50-21 the score.
Shane Burke, a newcomer to the squad this year, played a very solid game, getting both offensive and defensive rebounds and setting up some nice assists for his colleagues.
Up front, Joseph Corr, Peter Lacey and Justice Anikwe ran the ball impressively, crashing the boards well, while the added height of David Keane boosted the Swords defence.
