Swords prove too sharp for Trinity
Wednesday February 24 2010
SWORDS Hockey Club's ladies first team secured another important three points in the league on Saturday, away to Trinity.
The local side had a poor start to the game and were lucky not to be behind at halftime after Trinity had mostly dominated the play from the start, attacking the visitors with quick ball and high intensity. Swords managed to create some chances of their own in the first half, but unfortunately couldn't manage to finish them off. The second half saw Swords much improved and they started to dominate midfield, causing Trinity to lose control of the game. Some good attacking play from Swords saw them increase the pressure on the Trinity defence and resulted in a couple of short corners. However, it was from a free from outside the circle that Swords finally broke the deadlock. The free from Siobhan McKittrick saw her beat three Trinity players and link up with Rachel Jones who then squared the ball across the goal for Breda Orohoe to tap in in the corner.
Shortly after, Swords won another short corner, but this time they made it count as it was executed perfectly from Cerrie Byrne to Fiona Walshe on the left and she buried her shot past the keeper.
With about 10 minutes remaining, Trinity won a lucky short corner and against the run of play pulled a goal back.
This provided a nervous final few minutes to the game, but Swords hung on to claim all three points and in fact were unlucky not to score again before the end of the game.
