Bad injury halts Balbriggan's charge

* Match abandoned

Wednesday February 03 2010

BALBRIGGAN were going well and looked to be on top in this Polikoff Cup first-round tie, before a serious injury to one of the Rovers players in extra time prompted the referee to abandon the game as an ambulance was called.

'I'm not sure if it was a break or a dislocation but we obviously wish the player well,' said the Balbriggan manager Ian Wall.

'Though it is a pity because it means we will have to do it all again from the start, despite the fact that we were well on top and had the lion's share of the chances.'

The manager admitted that his side had not been doing well in the Major Sunday league but added: 'We have a couple of players back from injury now so we are hoping to have a better second half to the season.'

Meanwhile, Rush had no game despite being down to play Lorcan at home in the league, but after a pitch inspection the referee deemed the sheltered goalmouth area wasn't fit for football.

'It was just one area of the pitch, but the ref deemed it too dangerous as there was still a lot of ice and he was right,' revealed Rush boss Mal Bollard.

Rush are sixth in the league and Mal added that considering they had a lot of new players, they would be delighted to finish the campaign in the top six.
