Glebe get the blues after goal of month contender
GLEBE NORTH................. 0 BLUEBELL UNITED........... 2
GLEBE North knew their first game of the season last Friday night against Bluebell was going to be a tough one, and despite a close contest two goals mid-way through the second half gave the visitors all three points at Market Green. Bluebell were last season's runners-up, but Glebe put it up to their more illustrious opponents until they were undone by a wonder strike. With 58 minutes on the clock, a fine cross in from the left was volleyed back across the goal and into the far corner by the Bluebell number 9 for what must surely be considered the goal of the month.
' It was some volley and there was nothing our keeper could do about it,' admitted Glebe manager Liam Kelly afterwards.
The score came against the run of play, as moments earlier Glebe had been looking dangerous before that particular move broke down after a poor pass on the edge of the area.
Soon after the breakthrough goal Bluebell doubled their advantage when another cross in from the left was headed home.
Darkness had fallen on Glebe's new all-weather pitch at this stage and the big moon shining over the Glebe goalmouth looked ominous, but Liam Kelly's outfit are nothing if not fighters and it is to their credit that they kept battling until the end.
However the best chance in the closing stages fell to Bluebell, and only for the hands of keeper Jason Lowney Glebe would have fallen further behind.
' We matched them for an hour, but after they went ahead with that super goal they were the better side,' admitted Kelly.
Glebe, however, have no reason to be disappointed. This, after all, was only their first game, whereas it was Bluebell's third. In their previous match they drew with the defending champions Crumlin.
