In a hard-hitting critique of the domestic league last week, GERRY KELLY insisted the time has come 'switch off the life support' and 'let the league die'. This week, the well known broadcaster offers his alternative to the current set-up and argues his plan could be a win-win for all involved... THE first weekend of a new season and attendance figures across the five matches played in the Premier Division of our top soccer league make for sad reading.

GIVEN the high quality of coverage devoted to the Airtricity League in your newspaper, it was disappointing to read Gerry Kelly's article, 'Switch off the life support', which displayed a serious lack of understanding of senior football in this country. Mr. Kelly's central premise is that the Airtricity League is financially insolvent and increasingly irrelevant to football fans. Presumably, Mr. Kelly wrote this article in such a hurry that he left himself no time to research the facts. While that is unfortunate, please allow me to clear up a few issues in case similar time management issues arise in the future:

THE eve of a new football season and I should be excited. Sorry, but for the first time ever I couldn't give a damn if a ball wasn't kicked in anger. You see, the League of Ireland's a farce, a competition and entity that seems to stumble from one disaster to the next. Derry City's deceit finally caught up with them. The litany of Cork clubs consigned to the annals of history grows. Champions Bohemians are mortgaged to the hilt.
